Grades K-2

Lesson plans for K-2

K-2 planning works best with short segments, consistent routines, and plenty of modeling.

When you are time-poor or teaching the last period, predictable transitions keep young learners focused and on track.

Planning notes for K-2

  • Keep mini-lessons under 10 minutes before moving to practice.
  • Use visual cues and predictable routines to support transitions.
  • Build in movement breaks or hands-on practice every 15–20 minutes.
  • Use simple exit checks to see what students understood.

Common needs: ELL, IEP, behavior

K-2 classrooms often include emerging readers and multilingual learners. Plan for visuals, short directions, and extra modeling. For IEP or 504 supports, note preferred seating, extra response time, or alternative ways to show understanding.

Behavior supports work best when routines are explicit and students know the next step. Build in positive reinforcement and calm-down routines for transitions, especially after lunch or last period.
