Kindergarten Phonics CVC Words Lesson Plan
Students practice blending and segmenting CVC words using letter tiles, sound boxes, and partner reading. The lesson builds on previous letter-sound knowledge and ends with a quick dictation check.
Learning Objectives
- Blend three sounds to read CVC words.
- Segment CVC words into individual sounds.
- Write at least 2 CVC words from dictation.
Warm-Up: Sound Review
5 min- Flash letter cards for the target sounds (a, t, p, s, i, n). Students say the sound chorally.
- Quick game: 'I say the sound, you show me the letter.' Students hold up letter cards.
- Transition: 'Today we put these sounds together to read words!'
Mini-Lesson: Blending
8 min- Model blending with magnetic letters on the board: s-a-t → sat.
- Touch each letter, say each sound, then slide finger and blend: 'sssaaattt → sat.'
- Repeat with 2 more words (pin, tap). Students blend along with you.
Guided Practice: Sound Boxes
8 min- Students use sound boxes and letter tiles at their desks.
- Say a word (nap). Students push one tile into each box as they segment: /n/ /a/ /p/.
- Then blend back together. Repeat with 3–4 words.
- Circulate and listen to individual students blending.
Partner Practice
5 min- Partners take turns: one student builds a CVC word with tiles, the other reads it.
- Switch roles after 2 words each.
- Teacher pulls a small group for reteach if needed.
Closure: Dictation Check
4 min- Dictate 2 CVC words (sit, pan). Students write on whiteboards.
- Quick check: 'Hold up your board!' Scan for accuracy.
- Celebrate effort: 'You read and wrote real words today!'
Differentiation Notes
- Scaffold: Provide picture cues alongside CVC words for students still learning letter-sound correspondence.
- Extension: Blend and read CCVC words (stop, snap) for students who are ready.
- ELL support: Use real objects or pictures to show word meanings (e.g., a picture of a pan).
Assessment
- Student product: 2 dictated CVC words on whiteboard.
- Criteria: Correct letter for each sound position.
- Success indicator: 80% of students correctly write at least 1 of 2 dictated words.
Teacher Tips
- Pre-sort letter tiles into bags for each student to save transition time.
- Use consistent hand motions for blending (touch-touch-slide) so students internalize the routine.
- If students are struggling, drop back to 2-sound blending (at, it) before moving to 3-sound words.
